Matthew Schonfeld brings years of experience to HPLP’s comprehensive workers’ compensation defense practice, working with insurance carriers, employers, self-insureds, third party administrators and government entities in diverse industries of all sizes to effectively resolve claims and minimize client exposure.

He joined HPLP from a large South Carolina insurance defense firm, where he practiced exclusively in workers’ compensation defense. With a diverse background in civil and criminal litigation, Schonfeld began his legal career as a law clerk in Columbia, S.C., handling matters involving personal injury litigation, as well as workers’ compensation and criminal defense, before delivering legal solutions to long-term healthcare facilities as an associate with a Charleston, S.C.-based firm.

Schonfeld is also a former U.S. Marine Corps officer, having served as a Judge Advocate focused on criminal litigation and federal regulatory and administrative law. Acquiring hundreds of hours in court, he represented service members and the government in felony and misdemeanor jury and bench trials. He additionally fulfilled in-house counsel duties, analyzing ethical and administrative regulations, and supervised a number of complex administrative investigations. Schonfeld was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for meritorious service as a Judge Advocate in 2012.

A South Carolina native, Schonfeld, his wife and two children have made James Island their home and enjoy visiting the local parks, crabbing and playing soccer.
